The Cheapest Holiday Season Begins

When and where you could travel this season and make the most with around 50 new direct flights released by major airlines.

From European cities where it hits 17c in February to more adventurous locations further afield, here are some winter holiday destinations as recommended by experts.

Why Winter is the Best Time for Affordable Travel

Colder weather does not have to signal the end of your travel plans. In reality, winter getaways can be the most cost-effective, especially during January and February. With more than 50 new direct flights available to a variety of destinations this season, there is an excellent opportunity to discover lesser-known places before they gain popularity and become more expensive.

Following the Christmas period, there is typically a significant drop in demand for travel, as most people are not considering another holiday so soon after the festive season. This lack of demand results in much lower prices, a trend that continues into February. Travel costs “come down drastically” from around 10 January, once festive travellers have returned home, with the notable exception of ski resorts. Therefore, travellers can expect the best value for flights and accommodation at this time of year.

Ideal Destinations for a Winter City Break

Winter is the perfect season for a budget-friendly city break, as the weather is less of a concern when enjoying museums, galleries, and local cuisine. In Eastern Europe, prices are generally much lower than in the UK, making an off-season trip an excellent way to secure “some really good deals”. Poland, for example, is often overlooked, despite its historic cities such as Krakow and Warsaw offering rich cultural experiences at great value.

This winter, Ryanair has launched its first direct flights from Leeds Bradford to Warsaw, as well as from London and Newcastle to Wroclaw, Poland’s third-largest city. These routes are among many new connections announced by several airlines for the season. Travellers are encouraged to consult available flight tables to discover whether any new destinations are accessible from their nearest airport.

The Magic of Winter in Eastern Europe

There is a unique charm to exploring cities in Eastern Europe during the winter months, especially as snowy conditions are common. As long as you are dressed appropriately, wandering through these cities can be a magical experience. While Prague in the Czech Republic remains a popular choice, Bratislava in neighbouring Slovakia is a wonderful alternative that offers exceptional value for money.

By steering clear of the more famous and tourist-heavy destinations, it is often possible to find cheaper deals throughout every country. For example, Tbilisi in Georgia, previously considered difficult to reach, is now accessible via direct flights with British Airways and EasyJet, making it a convenient and affordable option for winter travel.

Western Europe’s Sunny Options

If the prospect of embracing snowy weather is not appealing, western Europe presents several destinations with pleasantly sunny days even during winter. Portugal stands out as a particularly attractive choice, remaining lively well into the late hours. For travellers seeking more than just beaches, Porto and Lisbon are excellent alternatives to the traditional resort towns.

Malta offers a reliable option for winter travel, welcoming visitors throughout the year. Similarly, certain areas of Greece, such as Rhodes, have extended their tourist seasons and remain open later than before. However, it is wise to exercise caution when considering resorts, especially those in the northern Mediterranean, as some may not operate fully during winter. For instance, some facilities like swimming pools might be under refurbishment, which could impact your stay.

While the Greek islands are a popular choice, venturing to the Greek mainland reveals a wealth of fascinating and beautiful destinations. These places tend to be much more affordable, owing to their lower influx of international tourists. Even Athens, the capital, offers experiences at a fraction of the cost compared to major cities like London or Paris.

Southern Spain and Italy, especially Sicily, promise better weather than the UK during winter months, though it is important to note that temperatures drop once the sun sets. Among the lesser-known gems, the Spanish city of Almeria is described as "very undervalued", boasting sunny days with temperatures reaching 17°C in February. Despite not being the most picturesque city, Almeria is renowned for its friendly locals and high-quality cuisine. Notably, the generosity of tapas varies across Spain, but in Almeria, the portions are remarkably generous, often matching a full meal and provided free of charge with drinks at some establishments.

Southern Turkey, particularly Antalya, features affordable, good-quality hotels and is considered a pleasant retreat from the British winter. Many travellers are yet to discover the merits of this region.

North Africa also offers excellent value for money, with Tunisia reopening to tourists and Morocco providing exciting alternatives to the popular Marrakesh. Instead, consider the port city of Essaouira or the historic and intriguing city of Fes for a distinctive experience.

Renewed Adventure in Long-Haul Travel

The landscape for winter sun holidays has transformed significantly, with far-flung destinations now opening up in a way not seen since 2019. There is a noticeable trend of travellers, particularly older adventurers, venturing further afield. Many are seizing the opportunity to visit regions such as Southeast Asia for the first time since the pandemic. Although airfares have increased, countries including Vietnam and Laos remain attractive due to their exceptional value for money upon arrival.

North American Destinations: Competitive Deals

Meanwhile, in the United States, tourist attractions are presenting enticing deals in response to the prevailing political climate. With changing attitudes towards foreign visitors, hoteliers are eager to attract international guests. During the off-season, states such as Florida and Virginia, which depend heavily on overseas tourism, are offering very competitively priced packages.

Exploring the Caribbean and South America

The Caribbean remains a compelling option for those seeking warmer climes. For travellers drawn to South America, Argentina stands out as an affordable base due to ongoing economic challenges. This affordability extends to neighbouring countries like Uruguay and Brazil, making regional travel more accessible. There has also been a reported increase in interest amongst travellers heading to Columbia this year.

South Africa: Value Through Exchange Rates

South Africa serves as another classic example where higher flight costs are balanced by a favourable exchange rate. The consistently strengthening pound against the South African rand, combined with a high standard of cuisine, continues to make South Africa an appealing destination for British tourists year after year.
